Osteoporosis is a disease of bones in which the bones become weak, thin and brittle. It also becomes porous. People suffering from osteoporosis are very prone to fracture and this is the reason for many old people to walk with bended spine. Here are some of the causes for osteoporosis.
People who do not take sufficient amount of calcium suffer from osteoporosis later on because their bones become weak and the density of the bones also becomes low. Calcium is one of the most vital nutrients for healthy and strong bones. Therefore you must consume sufficient amount of calcium daily to prevent osteoporosis. Milk, peas, almonds, nuts, etc are good sources of calcium. Lemon too is rich in calcium.
Another reason for osteoporosis is lack of physical activities and exercise. People who don’t exercise regularly or who are not involved in any other physical activities such as dancing, swimming etc., are likely to get osteoporosis later on. Exercise improves your blood circulation and prepares your body to absorb calcium and other nutrients required for your bones. Thus your bones become strong. You should walk daily at least 30 minutes or do jogging, swimming, bicycling or any other exercise which suits your body and time.
Hormonal imbalance is one of the biggest causes of osteoporosis. Testosterone and estrogen are two hormones which prevent Osteoporosis in men and keep their bones strong whereas women need estrogen for strong bones. When there is loss of these hormones in men, they get prone to Osteoporosis. Similarly when women stop menstruating there is hormonal imbalance due to which they suffer from osteoporosis at old age. Only good diet and healthy life style can prevent Osteoporosis. Imbalance of several other hormones too causes osteoporosis such as parathyroid hormone-hyperparathyroidism. Due to it much calcium is lost through urine and finally the bone suffers the calcium loss
Vitamin D deficiency too causes osteoporosis. Your body can use and absorb calcium from the food you eat only if you get sufficient amount of Vitamin D. In absence of Vitamin D the calcium you eat will not be used. Hence your bones will be deprived of the vital nutrients and will later on cause Osteoporosis.
Smoking and drinking alcohol cause mineral loss from your body, due to which your bones become weak. To avoid osteoporosis you need to quit smoking and minimize the intake of alcohol.
