Dehydration and Its Treatment

The major part, nearly 75 %, of our body is made up of water. Dehydration occurs when the amount of water getting out of the body is greater than the amount of water intake. There are natural processes of loosing water – through breathing, sweating, urine and bowel discharge. But when the normal water discharge exceeds its limit the body suffers from lack of water and various complications arise. This is dehydration. The other causes of dehydration are diarrhea, vomiting, sweat, diabetes, burns and inability to drink water.

In these cases water along with various vital minerals such as potassium and sodium goes out of body and creates various problems. But in summer the most common cause of dehydration is excessive sweating and inadequate drinking of water.

Dehydration in its extremity can lead to memory loss, vomiting and lethargy. The pulse rate grows faster and weaker. The eyes get sunken and lips and mucus membranes become very dry. The skin may wrinkle. Dehydration can even lead to death. So do not ignore dehydration and treat it from the very beginning. There are few effective home remedies to treat dehydration.

Drinking lots of water is the primary thing. Your can also drink homemade ORS (Oral Rehydration Solution) in summer to regain energy quickly. To make it you need a glass of water, a teaspoon of sugar and pinch of salt. Add yogurt, buttermilk, mint, apple, pomegranate, papaya, banana, carrot, potato, green coconut etc. in your everyday diet to fight dehydration. Mix ½ teaspoon ginger juice, 1 teaspoon mint juice and 1 teaspoon honey in a container. Drink the whole thing. It is a great folk medicine to treat dehydration.

Another such effective home remedy is pomegranate juice. But before drinking the juice chew the inner lining of pomegranate with salt. Lemon does wonder in dehydration. Grind a lemon along with seeds and make a paste. Add salt. Take 1 teaspoon of this paste 2-3 times a day. You can also prepare a drink with water, sugar, salt and few drops of lemon juice. Chew a small piece of dry ginger and drink a large cup of cold butter milk to get rid of bad effects of dehydration. Roast few cumin seed, coriander seed and fenugreek seed. Grind it to powder and preserve it. Sprinkle some of this powder and rock salt on the curd or yogurt and have it.
