The Feingold diet is a program that emphasizes on food elimination required to get rid of hyperactivity. This program was introduced by Ben F. Feingold as a treatment for attention deficit-hyperactive disorder (ADHD) occurring in children.
The purpose of this diet is to eliminate foods that come along with artificial colors and flavors. Besides, it doesn’t allow you to take petroleum-based preservatives and salicylates. This article will let you know about how the Feingold diet works.
How the Feingold diet works
Under the Feingold diet, you avoid taking in three types of food additives. You also don’t go for a particular class of synthetic sweeteners like Aspartame, Alitame and Neotame, as because these can have negative impact on your nervous system.
The food additives you should avoid are synthetic colors (FD & C and D & C colors), synthetic preservatives (BHT, TBHQ, etc.) and synthetic flavors of various kinds. However, the diet doesn’t eliminate certain artificial colors like the ones made from Iron Oxide, because these are not harmful for the human body.
During the first few weeks of starting this diet, you shouldn’t take in foods having salicylates. These foods include temperate-zone fruits, spices, vegetables, etc. Instead of grapes, apples or almonds, you’re asked to take bananas and pears. Cashews are also permitted.
When you’re under a Feingold diet, you should avoid taking apricots, berries, tomatoes, pickles, plums, oranges and cucumbers. Beverages like tea and coffee are also not allowed under this diet. Raisins, tangerines and Oil of wintergreen are other items to avoid while you follow this type of diet.
Many think they should not take chocolate, sugar and soft drinks under a Feingold diet. Although you’re asked to have such foods in limited quantity, yet this doesn’t mean that you’ll stop taking them completely.
The Feingold Association suggests that you don’t take in corn syrup including high-fructose corn syrup, foods with sodium nitrate (those served at lunch) and corn sugar. You should also stay away from foods having monosodium glutamate and hydrolyzed vegetable protein, which comprises glutamate.
Sometimes, children affected with ADHD are found to be sensitive to foods like eggs, wheat, tofu, soybeans and milk products. So, let them avoid such foods for quite some time. Instead, let them take vegetables, fresh meat and fruit juices.
