How To Prevent Headaches After Exercise

We all know that exercise is very beneficial for our health. We must exercise at least half an hour a day for minimum five days in a week.
But people often complain of headaches after exercise. Frequency of these exercise headaches may differ in various people.

An individual may experience headache during or after an exercise. Usually this pain is a throbbing one and is present at both sides of head. Headaches after exercise are not uncommon. Most of us experience this headache at some point in our life.

When you exercise, blood supply to your head, neck and the scalp increases. The increased supply of blood causes blood vessels to dilate, which results in a headache after exercise. This may be the reason behind frequent headaches after a strenuous exercise.

Dehydration, inadequate fluid intake, exercising in heat, and decrease in blood sugar level are some common factors which cause headaches after exercise. Headaches after exercise can be prevented by following some tips given below.

If you are just beginning your exercise plan then start gradually. Do not try rigorous exercise in the beginning, instead begin with a simple brisk walk and then practice mild exercises.

If you are a regular workout enthusiast then you should begin your daily exercise with a good warm up. Stretch your muscles for a few minutes and then proceed with your workout.

Similarly, at the end do not stop exercising suddenly. You should gradually bring down your heart rate and then stop with another session of stretching.

Dehydration is one of the leading causes of headaches after exercise. Hence avoid this factor by drinking sufficient amount of liquid including plenty of water. If you are not well hydrated, it may trigger headaches after you complete your exercise. Always keep yourself hydrated.

Headaches after exercise may also result if you exercise in the morning and remain hungry till afternoon. To prevent exercise headaches, you must have your breakfast on time.

This will help you to maintain your blood sugar level. If your headache is caused due to a dip in the blood sugar level, you can also take a glucose tablet before beginning your workout.

You should avoid exercising in hot environment or at higher altitudes. If you still get persistent headaches after exercise, you should consult your doctor to diagnose the underlying causes of your exercise headaches.
