Tips For Coping With Diabetes

Diabetes is common disease and is known to everyone. During the past two decades there has been an alarming increase in the number of people suffering from diabetes. Worldwide almost 246 million people are its victim.

It does not show any signs or symptoms in the beginning. Hence, we all need to take proper care and go for a regular check up. Diabetes can be controlled and in some cases even reversed by following healthy lifestyle. If you are a diabetic then you can benefit from the following tips for coping with diabetes.

Start with improving your eating habits. You should not skip any meal and should eat timely. Eat plenty of green vegetables and fresh fruits. Fiber is good for you hence eat foods which are rich in fiber such as whole grains, oatmeal, beans, cabbage, barley, brown rice, etc.

Limit your intake of processed foods which contains high sugar and fats. Carbohydrate intake should be minimized. You should avoid foods containing high sodium. Everyday take meals at the same time and in same amount. You can ask your dietician to develop a diabetic diet for you.

In Type 2 Diabetes, one of the major risk factors is obesity. So if you are overweight, you must try to loose it gradually. If you don’t loose your excess weight then it will lead to many problems. The excess body fats will not allow your body to use the insulin produced in your body.

Consumption of some psychiatric drugs can lead to weight gain quite rapidly due to which the control of blood sugar level becomes difficult. So consult your doctor and try to replace the drug with the one which does not make you to gain weight.

Keep a blood glucose meter with you and closely monitor your blood glucose. You should check your sugar levels before and after your meals and also after exercises. This will help you to find about the amount of insulin and medications needed by you.

Always carry insulin with yourself and never miss its dose. Educate your family and friends about diabetes and teach them to give you insulin in case you need it when you fall unconscious.

Increase your activities if your job is sedentary. You can begin by walking. Wear shoes that are comfortable. Exercise regularly but avoid strenuous exercise. Be optimistic and develop a positive attitude towards life.
